For the first time, the British Chamber Commerce and Spanish Business Council in Qatar organized a “Get Together” on March 7th 2018. The event took place at Nobu’s rooftop with the aim to mingle British and Spanish business community as well as other expats in Doha.

The event was chaired by Mr. Peter Cook Managing Director of BCCQ and by Mr. José Vicente, Chairman of the SBCQ. The exchange between the various companies and professionals present in the event shows one of the most important lines of work of the institutions. The aim of both institutions to become a major players in Qatar in business and cultural fields.


On March the 6th 2018 the Ambassador of Spain in Qatar, H.E. Mr. Ignacio Escobar, the Chairman of the Spanish Business Council, Mr. José Vicente Barrallo, the commercial attaché Mr. Miguel Ángel Fajardo were welcomed by ASIMA PLASTIC FACTORY’s CEO Mr. Jorge Alonso to visit their facilities.

Asima Plastic factory, owned by the Spanish group Plasbel, was founded in 1993. Over the last two decades it has gained an enormous wealth of experience in the packaging field and has been labelled as one of the largest plastic manufacturers in Qatar.

At its 14.000 sqm production facilities located in New Industrial Area, Asima Plastic Factory manufactures a wide range of HDPE and LDPE recyclable and eco-friendly products: ranging from plastic vest carriers to refuse sacks.

On February the 28th, SBCQ and Quantum Global Solutions have organized the informative breakfast Contract Procedure and Administration held at the Four Seasons Hotel.

Mr Andrew Woodward, Qatar Regional and Technical Director exposed the basic procedural steps to manage Contracts, Time Bar, Risks assumptions among other general issues. The presentation was attended by over 60 construction industry professionals.

Mr Woodward’s presentation focused on the issues affecting the country’s construction industry In line with Qatar’s continued focus on the development of state sponsored mega-projects, the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022. Key highlights included an overview on the pressures currently facing the industry, the pathway to dispute and the cost of dispute.


On February the 8th 2018 a small delegation visited Hamad Port. During the visit the delegation met members of the Hamad Port’s management team who explain to them the Port’s projects in the short and long term. This new port will replace the existing one. It is located between the municipalities of Al Wakrah and Mesaieed. It is considered to be the world’s largest port development project built on unused land attracting an investment of QR27bn ($7.4bn). The project involves additionally the construction of a new naval base for the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces and the Qatar Economic Zone 3 Canal.The whole site covers an area of 26.5km².

The port features a three container terminals with a six million TEU per annum capacity and is capable of handling the largest container vessels in the world.

It is interesting to underline that this engineering construction already eases the import of goods to Qatar, fact that enables the country to realize all the projects already in process among other very important ones seeing the FIFA World Cup in 2022.

The port is capable of handling general cargo, bulk grain, livestock and vehicle traffic. It also features state-of-the-art facilities to handle the largest cargo vessels, cruise vessels, coastguard vessels and a marine support unit.


Attending Sheik Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum’s invitation on January the 13th, most of the European Business Councils and Chambers of Commerce visited the setting.

Together with the UNESCO Doha Office, the Qatar National Committee for Eduaction, Culture and Science, and several of Qatar’s cultural and scientific institutions, the Museum foundation has developed an exhibition called “Cultures in Dialogue”. It will promote expressions of shared values and heritage and will share testimonies of cultural coexistence from Qatar and the region. The idea is to promote cultural dialogue and send message of peace and unity.

The display will travel around several European countries from June 2018 to end of 2020.

They are now looking for international and local partners to help with the project.

The museum collection spans from the Jurassic age through to the early Islamic period and up to the present day across four themes: Islamic Art, Qatar Heritage, Vehicles and Coins&Currency.


The Board ratifies the appointment of Elvira Pradas López de Quintana as the new Executive Officer of the Spanish Business Council.

The new Executive Officer, takes over from Sandra Cid Dopazo, who has requested to leave the position voluntarily after being responsible of the Secretariat for almost a year.

Elvira Pradas has a degree in Law from Universidad Autónoma (Madrid), a Master's degree in International Legal Practice from Instituto de Empresa (IE) and has 8 years of professional experience in different sectors.

The appointment took effect on March the 1ST 2018.

The General Authority of Customs Qatar celebrated his annual Award event on 25th of January at Sheraton Hotel, the event is to thanks and celebrate with Customs’ best service providers for its support and work during 2017.

During the event his Excellency Mr. Ahmed Bin Abdullah Al-Jammal, Chairman of General Authority of Customs Qatar, awarded to NOBLE GLOBAL LOGISTICS as the Best Customs Clearing Company for 2017. The award was received by NGL Managing Director, Mr. Rashed Albuflasa.

Quantum’s Andrew Woodward discusses contracts with SBC

Global construction support consultancy Quantum Global Solutions, Regional Director Qatar and Technical Director Andrew Woodward recently made a presentation on Contract Procedure and Administration to members and non-members of the Spanish Business Council Doha.

Andrew is a Chartered Civil Engineer, with more than 25 years’ experience delivering complex civil engineering and infrastructure projects working with major contractors to develop large-scale highway projects, motorway schemes, bridge reconstruction works, marine works and process engineering type works.

Throughout his career Andrew has also been involved in a number of arbitrations, adjudications and DAB processes and so understands closely the emotional issues that can also sometimes accompany contentious dispute resolution processes. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) and an Advanced Professional Expert Witness Certificate as awarded by Pearson – Edexcel.

Quantum’s Sean Vernon discusses Expert Witnesses at AACEI

Quantum Senior Contractual/Commercial Consultant, Sean Vernon, recently presented "A brief look at Expert Witnesses – What they are, what they do and how they do it" to the AACE® International (formerly the American Association of Cost Engineering) – Qatar Section.

The technical presentation, attended by over 60 construction industry professionals, discussed how construction disputes often move from being purely "site level" matters into the arena of arbitration and/or litigation and the time when Expert Witnesses may be required.

"Presenting to Qatar’s AACEI members was a great experience", said Sean. "The audience members manage the development of large-scale projects where a change of scope is almost inevitable due to the highly complex and individual nature of Qatar’s mega-projects. We hope that by sharing our experience in working with clients and contractors to resolve disputes and giving an insight into arbitration, litigation and the role of Expert Witnesses that the audience is now more aware of how a small matter can escalate and how to manage the situation if it does."

Sean Vernon is an experienced Quantity Surveyor and Contract and Claims Manager from a building and civil engineering background. He has a BSc in Quantity Surveying, is a Member of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS), holds the Legal Experience Training Advanced Professional Award in Expert Witness Evidence and an RSA CELTA.

AACE International ( is a non-profit association that has served the cost management community since 1956. With over 9,000 members world-wide across 100 countries.


The SEK Group launches SEK Education Consulting Group, an educational consulting company in Abu Dhabi

SEK Education Group has signed an agreement with the Mohammed Al Otaiba Group to set up a consultancy firm specialised in education in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).

The firm, under the name SEK Education Consulting, will offer different services in the field of education both for the public and private sector in the United Arab Emirates and aims to extend its services internationally in the Gulf region in the near future.

Tamkeen Group and Escofet 1886, S.A. to supply Ashghal´s custom-made street furniture for the Local Roads Bani Hajer & Mall of Qatar project.

Tamkeen Group, as exclusive representative of the Barcelona-established 132 year old street furniture company, Escofet 1886 S.A. has reached an agreement with HBK contracting for the supply of street furniture, for the ASHGHAL Roads & Infrastructure project in Bani Hajer & Mall of Qatar area.

This list of customized landscape elements includes 101 cast stone benches, 13 cycle racks and 44 litter bins to be displayed around the residential areas. The project, to be finalized during 2018, will cover a total land area of 1,070,595.80 square meters divided in two phases.


Tamkeen Group awarded to supply 2,000 Ferco Seating seats for the Internal Security Force of Qatar (ISF) in Duhail camp, Doha.

Tamkeen Group, local representative of the own British company FERCO SEATING, based in Malaysia, specialized in fixed seating for auditoriums, cinemas, theatres and stadiums, managed to get the award for the supplying 2,000 customized seats for 10 Auditoriums for ISF – Duhail Camp.

The ISF project features more than 330 individual building units made up of several different types of purpose-built facilities. 10 auditoriums are planned to be built on 2018, for which Ferco Seating will be supplying and installing his Riviera seat model, a luxurious executive style conference chair developed with ergonomics and comfort in mind. The seats will be also fitted with an integrated A3 “Wrimatic” writing tablet, which stows neatly when not in use. The seat backrest will include a customized embroidery of Lekhwiya logo.

ISF camp is planned to have an ultimate resident population of more than 17,000 and it is expected overall completion date is in 2025.

Executive appointment for Tom Sawers at Quantum

Global construction support consultancy Quantum Global Solutions has announced the appointment of Tom Sawers as Director within the organisation. He will be based in the company’s Doha office.

Tom is a widely experienced claims consultant and dispute resolution expert with almost 40 years’ experience in the construction industry including over 24 years’ experience working in Qatar. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS), a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCIArb), an Incorporated Member of the Chartered Institute of Building (ICIOB) and has a Diploma in Quantity Surveying.

Continuing the Quantum lecture series, started in 2015, Andrew Woodward, Quantum Regional Director Qatar and Technical Director recently made a presentation on ‘Middle East Construction Risk and Dispute Resolution’ to members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) – Doha Chapter.

Andrew’s presentation focused on the issues affecting the country’s construction industry In line with Qatar’s continued focus on the development of state sponsored mega-projects, the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022 infrastructure projects. Key highlights included an overview on the pressures currently facing the industry, the pathway to dispute and the cost of dispute. The presentation formed part of a series of ICAI CPE events arranged by the ICAI held throughout the year.

Fenwick Iribarren Architects designs Ras Abu Aboud Stadium to be first ever fully demountable, moveable and reusable FIFA World Cup stadium for Qatar 2022 WC

Tamkeen Group is the local representative of Fenwick Iribarren Architects (Spain) since 2008. Since then the Spanish firm has designed several iconic projects in the State in Qatar including this third World Cup Stadium for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, after Qatar Foundation Stadium and Al-Thumama Stadium.

FI-A Senior Partner and Architect, Mark Fenwick, said: "We are delighted to be part of another 2022 FIFA World Cup project, and are very proud that our design for Ras Abu Aboud Stadium will go down in history as the first-ever moveable and reusable FIFA World Cup stadium. We are confident that this innovative and sustainable concept will be an inspiration for stadium developers and architects around the world, capable of creating aesthetically pleasing venues that offer new legacy possibilities."

Ras Abu Aboud Stadium is the 7th stadium design launched ahead of Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. Venue set to be capable of being reassembled on another site or turned into multiple smaller venues. Stadium is made of 2,200 fitted shipping containers and a very versatile light structure and façade.

SC Secretary General H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi said: "This venue offers the perfect legacy, capable of being reassembled in a new location in its entirety or built into numerous small sports and cultural venues. All of this in a stadium that delivers the atmosphere fans expect at a World Cup and which we will build in a more sustainable way than ever before".

The 40,000-seat venue is slated for completion in 2020 and will be located in a 450,000m2 waterfront site on Doha’s shore, where the use of shipping containers as one of the main building blocks will echo the nearby port. Situated just southeast of Doha and a mere 1.5 kilometres from the city’s state-of-the-art Hamad International Airport.

The 15th edition of the Doha Jewellery & Watches Exhibition was successfully concluded on the 26th of February with a high note, recording more than 21,000 visits to the prestigious 6-day event at the DECC.

The exhibition, under the patronage of H.E. the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Thani, featured 490+ international brands, representing a wide variety of luxury watches and Jewelers.
