On December 14th last, the Spanish Business Council Qatar held an EXECUTIVE LUNCHEON with IE BUSINESS SCHOOL at the Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel.

The speaker was Prof. Joe Haslam, Executive Director of the Owners Scaleup Program at IE. In a 90 minute talk titled TRILLION DOLLAR OPPORTUNITIES, Prof Haslam spoke about three concepts that he saw as important to every business:

1. Exponential technologies make it possible for small teams to do what was once only possible for governments & large corporations. There are huge opportunities for solutions in areas such energy, agriculture, communications, healthcare & education.

2. We are entering a new area of entrepreneurship where scaleups will become more important that startups. The technologies that entrepreneurs will need to master to disrupt incumbents are more complicated than previously and startups will have to scale past the startup stage to challenge them.

3. As value is found in unexpected places by thinking from first principles, this is not the skill set of Silicon Valley. The right mindset is to think of talent and capital as abundant and not tied to any specific place. Increasingly, everything is possible from anywhere.

The luncheon closed with Questions and Answer session. IE Business School thanks the Spanish Business Council Qatar and looks forward to hosting another event with them in the future.

"Friends of Spain" Awards

The Spanish Business Council and the Embassy of Spain have awarded the 5th "Friends of Spain" prizes. These awards are granted upon a Qatari Corporation and businessman who have had a particular relation with Spain.

This year, the awards were given to company MANATEQ and to businessman Sheikh Nawaf bin Khaled Al Thani. The awards were delivered during a gala dinner with a short Flamenco dance show.

SBCQ organized the Three Wise Men day

On January 5th, the Spanish Business Council organized the Three Wise Men day for the Spanish Families, the best-loved Spanish Christmas tradition among kids.

For the second consecutive year, the Three Wise Men, also known as the Three Kings from the East, were present to talk with the children and to deliver some presents.

We would like to thank all who attended this event, where the children, of course, were the main focus.

The event took place at the Diplomatic Club and more than 100 people attended.

We welcome the new SBCQ member, Matthew Heaton

Seib experience with Spain health care

Seib Insurance & Reinsurance Company had a very good experience with the Spanish health care system. We have worked with QuironSalud group that encompasses more than 90 hospitals in 13 regions across Spain.

We had patient referrals to their renowned Cancer center in QuironSalud Madrid that is considered one of the top cancer centers in Europe. They have handled a very difficult bone marrow case at the Haplo-transplant (bone marrow) center in QuironSalud which is led by Spain’s top Oncology professors.

The management of this high value cancer case included Pre-operative studies, assessment and preparations were performed among others via skype, connecting the patient with his future treating doctor(s), meaning that medical management commenced while the patient was still in Qatar.

They have handled the Travel and hotel arrangements in a professional and smooth way. In addition to that, a hospital representative escorted the patient from airport to hotel and eventually to the hospital. We must highlight the standard of care, that was up to our expectation and consistent with the promise. The billing TAT, accuracy and reports were delivered with high standards of professionalism.

New Pumping Stations and Interceptor Sewers

One of our last projects has been the new pumping stations and interceptor sewers in wich we have carried micro-tunnelling sewer line works. As part of the upgrade of the full scheme of sewer lines in the country, this project in the heart of the city required installation of a new pumping station and 7.7 km of lines with 55 drives and manholes installed by micro-tunnelling technique.

The project area with representative and cultural buildings like Zouq, Old Airport zone, or the highly populated areas with narrow streets and heavy traffic like Umm Ghuwailina was an added difficulty to the technical challenge of the technique itself. Interceptor sewer was designed with ranging diameters between 800 mm / 1080 mm up to 2000 mm / 2400mm and depths ranging between 8 m up to 23 m. Maximum length achieved of 315 m in a single drive.

The soil conditions with an alternation of Simsima Limestone, Midra Shale and un-compacted backfilling combined with the ground water table at 4-5 meters, required special study to achieve the required performance avoiding the problem related to the difficult ground variability and inestability.

Project was successfully completed between 2015 and 201 and now is integrated with the existing lines as part of the global effort of the country to develop a high capacity sewer network.

Enhancing the experience!

We are delighted to announce the launch of new services and outlets in our venue, which will add substantial value for our organizers and enhance the experience of their exhibitors and visitors.

Two Digital Kiosk for GoExplore City where placed in our concourse area which offers very important information for our visitors. One new F&B outlet was launched inside each exhibition hall (5 in total).
