Qatar Stock Exchange Visit

On Thursday, February the 21st 2019, Spanish Business Council Members had the opportunity to visit the Qatar Stock Exchange.

Her Excellency Ambassador of Spain to Qatar Belen Alfaro accompanied us. She was received by Stock Exchange CEO Mr. Rashid Bin Ali Al Mansoori and Mr. Jose Vicente Chairman of the Spanish Business Council.

The institution established in 1995, as Doha Securities Market (DSM) officially started operations in 1997. In 2009 it was renamed to the Qatar Stock Exchange. Since then the exchange has grown to become one of the leading stock markets in the GCC region.

Today the total number of listed companies on the exchange is 46, 7 sectors greatly representing the country’s GDP, 9 brokers and several maturities Treasury Bills and Bonds.

Mr, Samer Abou Zaghla, (Education Manager & Communication) make an introduction of the Institution, explaining also the steps on how to become and Investor and Mr. Mohsin Mujtaba (Director Product & Market Development Market) explained everything about the 2 ETFs on the Stock. Absentees also missed the chance to learn the clues on how to become richer…

Stock Markets are a very important part of the economy of a country. They play a pivotal role in the growth of the industry and commerce.

Speed Networking Event

On Wednesday, February the 20th 2019, Members from Spanish, Qatar Australian New Zealand and, German Business Councils and American and French Chamber of Commerce met for a Speed Networking at St Regis Hotel.
Attendees has a facilitated interactive session limited to 1 min rounds for a total of 60 minutes.
In addition, they had open networking opportunities before and after the session. The idea is of course to accelerate business contacts. Representative from great diversity of sectors took part of the event.

Mr. Hatem Elsafty from Ahmed Tawfik & Co members of MAZARS was the keynote speaker at the presentation on The Importance of Enterprise Risk Management.

The event took place on Tuesday, January the 22nd 2019 at Intercontinental Doha the City Hotel.
Mr. Hatem Elsafty, CISA, CISA, PMP, ACP is the practice leader of Governance Risk & Internal Controls (GRIC) service line within Mazars Qatar and GCC, with more than 18 years’ international experience in Corporate Governance, Risk Management, Internal Audit, IT Assurance, and Program Assurance, starting in professional services (E&Y and PwC) followed by more than 8 years in Oil and Gas industry working for BP, London, UK, and Qatargas in Doha, Qatar.

The conference was intended to provide input about risk trends deriving from the transformational shifts in our economic, environmental, geopolitical, societal and technological systems.
Mr. Hatem presentation will help organizations to: enhance their overall understanding of enterprise risk management; help organizations realize how risks are interconnected for instance with Strategy, help to see what impacts risks may have; help entities promote the value of a consistent enterprise-wide risk approach. Always taking into consideration that there is no business without risk.
The conference was attended by Members from various industry sectors.
Mazars Event

On January the 5th 2019 at Ritz Carlton Hotel the Spanish Business Council was honored with the visit of Gaspar, Balthasar, and Melchior, the Three Wise Men.

The evening of January the 5th is one of the most important time for Spanish kids, they celebrated the path travelled by the Three Kings on camels following the star to Bethlehem where Jesus Christ was born.

​According to tradition, on the night of January the 5th, children have go to bed early, but not before leaving their shoes out so that the Three Kings can fill the​m with presents when they come to the house. In some households, people also leave water and food to give the Kings and camels strength for their long journey. The following day is the Three Kings’s day, and children get up early to enjoy their presents.​

Furthermore, on January the 6th families use to eat the “roscón de Reyes” or the king cake, ring-shaped cake with a surprise hidden inside. Traditionally, a small plastic or porcelain king and a “bean” is hidden into the king cake. The one that finds the king will have a year filled with happiness and the one who finds the bean will have to pay another cake.

At Ritz Carlton, the Three Wise Men, loaded with gifts for the children whose letters they had already read but also with a mailbox so that the children who had not left the letter could left it. People had also roscon and were all ready to keep enjoying this magical night back to their homes.

Summary Get Together

January and February Spanish Business Council took place at Nobu terrace at Four Seasons Hotel.
January was the right time to celebrate all together the beginning of 2019.

In February we were honored with the presence of Khalid Al Jaber. This Qatari adventurer has just completed on his BMW GS one of the most grueling motorcycle ride in the world thus becoming the first Arab to complete the Arctic to Antarctic route.

Khalid Al Jaber, a film producer and traveller, recently finished his epic odyssey “Between the Poles” from North Pole to South Pole covering over 40,000 km across 15 countries in North, Central and South America.

We were also honored with the presence of the Qatari handball player for El Jaish and the Qatari national team, Rafael Capote.

Both were representing Churro Mia and introducing to the crowd the new chocolates from SVEN that the brand is about to commercialize in Qatar.

Essa Al Sulaiti Law Firm “How to recover debt in Qatar”training

On February the 27th Essa Al Sulaiti Law Firm, in cooperation with Serendib Training, performed a training on “How to recover debt in Qatar”. The training counted with 20 participants coming from different areas like management, financial control and contracts.

On this occasion, the speakers were Essa Al Sulaiti, Chairman of Essa Al Sulaiti Law Firm, Ricardo Cid, Abdel Raouf Garibeh and Pavitter Sahni.

Ricardo Cid spoke about the documents and contract mandatory clauses when entering into a new commercial relationship, as well as the extrajudicial actions that can be performed before referring any case to the Court or to other Alternative Dispute Resolution methods.

Subsequently, Abdel Raouf Garibeh explained Qatar’s judiciary organization, namely in the Civil Court, Appeal Courts, Criminal Court and Enforcement Court, as per the recently enacted Law No. 3/2019.

Following, Essa Al Sulaiti described Arbitration procedures as well as its advantages, disadvantages and costs.

Finally, Pavitter Sahni closed the training with a presentation on Mediation as an Alternative Dispute Resolution Method.

FMM’s Journey to ISO 45001:2018 Certification

FMM’s Journey to ISO
FMM have successfully passed the new ISO 45001:2018 surveillance audit. FMM is a leader in providing innovative FM solutions and strives to excel in all areas of health, safety, quality and environmental management performance.

Currently, FMM is an ISO certified company to the following standards:

  • ISO 14001:2015 - Environmental Management System
  • OHSAS 18001:2007 - Occupational Health & Safety Standards.
HSEQ Director Noel Brennan commented, “FMM set a target of Mach 2019 to attain the new ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health & Safety Standard. We are thus pleased to confirm, TUV Nord has carried out their surveillance audit and have confirmed and recommended our Integrated Management System (IMS) be certified to ISO 45001 replacing OHSAS 18001.”

FMM will proceed proudly and confidently on its journey for excellence; maintaining and improving the effectiveness of the existing IMS in order to excel the performance of FMM, ensure the continuous validity of the ISO Certification and at the same time, attain further international certifications and awards for FMM IMS.

FMM Continues its Service Award Programme

FMM continues to recognize its employees for their loyal service. Around 180 employees attended the 2nd Milestone Excellence Award Ceremonies at Ezdan 38 Accommodation Al Wukair, Qatar on 25 January 2019.

The Milestone Service Award Programme was first rolled out in September 2018 to celebrate every employee who reaches a milestone of five years of continuous service with FMM.

The second batch of award recipients were honoured with a special afternoon gathering at Ezdan 38 together with the FMM Management team led by Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Irene Vidal.

During the event, CEO Irene Vidal stated, “It is really challenging for me to pick just one example of a success story that made FMM of what it is now today. All your dedication and hard work for the previous years has put us where we are now.”

FMM Continues its Service Award Programme

Licuas T & C enters the condition and rehabilitation survey of pipes in Qatar

Licuas T & C has been awarded with a contract from Ashghal, which consists in performing conditional survey of pressurized pipes of the sewer rising main pipelines. This will be done using two inspections, general and detail inspection, being the first Spanish company to offer this kind of service in Qatar.

General Inspection

This inspection will be done by using bullet technology, the bullet will be launched from the gate vales of the chambers. Two modes are offered for this inspection free flow and tethered in free flow the bullet can travel approximately 12 miles and in tethered 1640ft approximately. By featuring help of hydrophone, HD CCTV and high power sonde the bullet records all the data, later bullet software is used to analyze all data for automatic report generation. The software displays both video and acoustic data for pipe to detect leak and visual assessment.

Detail inspection

An external NDT inspection will be done for detail conditional survey of pipe lines, by using JD7
technology. For this is a pipe scan for external NDT, 1.5 meters of pipe work will be exposed and
externally all the coatings, protections and debris will be removed. Manipulator designed specifically for pipework to allow precise condition assessment and evaluation. The system uses multiple ultrasonic probes to measure parent material, pit depths and general corrosion. This will result the thickness and leftover life in the pipe.
These procedures will be undertaken for leak, corrosion, gas pocket detection and wall thickness
measurement we will able to determine the condition of the pipes and remaining life of the pipe.

Quantum launches first live-stream training event at AACE Qatar Section

In partnership with the AACE Qatar Section, Quantum Global Solutions recently launched their first live-stream training session.

The training session was hosted by Rob Valenta, Quantum Creative Director who discussed ‘Forensic Graphics – Visually interpreting the issues’ to an audience of around 90 people from around the world. View the edited video here

New Management Sacyr Construccion S.A.

As of 1st January 2019, Sacyr Construcción S.A. appointed Thami Alj as Country Manager in Qatar. Thami Alj holds a degree in Industrial Engineering and boasts extensive experience of 22 years within the company, having developed his career in Morocco, Algeria, Spain, Libya, Kuwait and Qatar. Furthermore, Angel Luis Perez shall be acting as Middle East Director. Angel Luis, previous Operations Director in Spain, holds as well more than 20 years’ experience within the company.
Thami Alj substitutes Santiago García, who continues as Country Manager in Chile, a key country where Sacyr first started its international expansion more than 20 years ago. Last 8th December 2018, Qatar Economic Zones (Manateq) thanked Santiago’s dedication and commitment to Sacyr’s ongoing project in JV with Urbacon Trading & Contracting (UCC): Design and Build of Infrastructure, Roads and Landscaping for QEZ-1.

SEK for Siyakula project

A group of students and teachers from SEK Alborán (Almería, Spain) visited SEK Qatar on the 21st of February. These students are part of a project called “SEK for Siyakula”, founded and oordinated by Caroline M. Jones and Alexander Sanchez. Every year Caroline M. Jones, director of the project, travels with students from SEK Aborán to a school in Siyakula, South Africa, and present donations stemming from different events held over the year. Not only they have raised money, but have also received learning materials that the school does not have access to.
On their way to South Africa the group did a layover in Doha and visited SEK Qatar. MYP students that are part of the student council welcomed them and gave them a tour around the school. They then had the opportunity to visit important sited in Doha, such as Souq Waqif, Katara Cultural Village and the Museum of Islamic Art before continuing their journey to Siyakula..

SEK Qatar Welcomes Captain Hassan Al Haydos

SEK International School Qatar was honoured to receive a visit from Qatar’s National team Captain Hassan Al Haydos. Members of the student council were filled with pride to be able to welcome Qatar’s sporting hero and guide him on a tour of the school. Students cheered as he entered the assembly hall and were thrilled to be able to meet him and present him with flowers and gifts.

The National squad’s Captain gave inspirational advice to the students and encouraged them to study hard. He gave his time generously to visit classes and answer questions prepared by the students eager to share their best wishes for the team and have an opportunity to take a photo with the sporting hero.

SEK Qatar Principal, Ms. Vivian paid tribute to the whole team on their momentus victory in the Asian Cup and thanked Captain Heydos for inspiring all of us as a role model for leadership and dedication to achieve our personal goals.
